The Very Hungry Caterpillar Mobile
Story-Inspired Art Project
🎯 Objective:
Create a hanging mobile based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
🧰 Materials Needed:

6–7 pompoms each in 1" and 1.5" sizes

Paper cutout foods based on the story: Use puffy paint to outline the food shapes for a tactile effect, helping visually impaired children recognize each item.

Green ribbon or vine string

White Wool felt (for cocoon)

Colored felt (for butterfly)

Paper cutout foods

Fluffy Pipe cleaner

Crystal bead stickers

Glue gun and glue sticks

🖌️ Instructions:

Read the Story
-
Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar aloud to the audience using expressive voice and gestures.

Begin creating the mobile while reinforcing the story.

Make the Caterpillars
-
Glue 6–7 small (1") pompoms together in a line to make the hungry caterpillar.

Glue 6–7 larger (1.5") pompoms together in a line to make the full caterpillar after eating.

Attach the Food
-
Attach paper cutout foods to the hungry caterpillar while retelling the story:
“One apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday…”

Create the Cocoon
-
Wrap white wool felt around the full caterpillar to make the cocoon.

Make the Butterfly
-
Cut a butterfly shape from colored felt.

Glue pipe cleaners on to represent the butterfly’s body.
-
Decorate it with crystal bead stickers.

Assemble the Mobile
-
Tie three green ribbons to the caterpillars and butterfly.

Attach the ribbons to the wooden stick and tie a string on top for hanging.
✅ Tips:

Hang each piece at different lengths for balance.
-
Use plenty of glue to secure the pompoms and felt.
